Telemedicine combines medicine, telecommunications and information technology to deliver improved healthcare from a distance. As technology develops and telecommunication costs reduce, the future of telemedicine will expand considerably over the next few years.

Telemedicine supports a variety of clinical and managerial activities:

  • “Live” videoconferencing between patient and doctor
  • Electronic transfer of radiological or pathological images
  • Remote patient monitoring
  • Enhance medical education

Benefits to be gained by the use of telemedicine include:

  • Improved access to medical care
  • Reduction in waiting lists
  • Reducing the need for patients to visit hospital
  • Easier access to leading clinical specialists for primary or secondary opinion
  • Increase in “technician led activities” supervised remotely
  • Increased productivity

The Trust has appointed a telemedicine manager to co-ordinate a variety of initiatives from the development of telemedicine under the guidance of the Medical Director to the identification of opportunities for these techniques and technologies.
