The Trust pioneered the introduction in the UK of the model of Clinical Management. This model delegates managerial authority to physicians, giving them greater access to the services they require while at the same time holding them responsible for the resources they consume.

The Trust’s 350 plus consultants are organised into four groups each led by a Clinical Divisional Director with a supporting General Manager. They have clinical, administrative and budgetary control of the group. The Trust’s clinical groups are:

  • Acute Patient Services - incorporating Surgery and Acute Medical Services
  • Managed Networks - incorporating Renal & Urology, Oncology & Haematology, Cardio-Thoracic, Children’s and Women’s Services
  • Core Clinical Services - incorporating Diagnostics and Therapeutic Services and Perioperative Services
  • Ambulatory Patient Care - incorporating Specialist Medicine, Dental Services and Outpatient Provision and Management

The Trust also contains national reference centres, many of which are of international repute. These include:

  • The National Poisons Centre
  • St John’s Institute of Dermatology
  • The Haematological Oncology Centre
  • The Stone Lithotripsy Centre
  • The Evelina Children’s Hospital
  • The Genetics Centre
  • The Cancer Treatment Centre
  • The Lupus Unit
