Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) has a long tradition of working with the British Armed Forces.

Nurses trained at St. Thomas' were referred to as Nightingale Nurses, after Florence Nightingale, normally credited as the founder of the nursing profession. Today these links with the Armed Forces still exist, but in a more practical way:

Secondary Health Care Services for the British Armed Forces and their dependants based in Germany.

In 1994 GSTT won, in open competition, a 5 year contract to manage the provision of hospital based healthcare services for the British Armed Forces based in Germany.

As part of the Contract GSTT used its 'Change Management' skills to close the 2 remaining British Military Hospitals in Germany and contract out the service through five major German hospitals located close to the major Garrison bases. Complex Tertiary cases are referred back to GSTT or elsewhere in UK.

GSTT has developed on behalf of the German Contract, a fully integrated wide area network Patient Administration System (PAS), linking Primary to Secondary healthcare. This on-line system allows GSTT to track all patient pathways and to effectively manage the Contract on behalf of the British Ministry of Defence.

GSTT's success led to the Contract being renewed in 2001 for a further four years. In 2005 a new contract was signed for a further 8 years.
